Casey Eye Institute is the Department of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The first OHSU department to organize as an institute, it is named after James and George Casey, founders of United Parcel Service.
Kenneth C. Swan, MD, who was the department chairman until 1978, founded the Department of Ophthalmology in 1945. Dr. Swan passed away in early 2007 after a long and illustrious career.
Frederick T. Fraunfelder, MD, assumed leadership in 1978, and served as chairman from 1978 until 1997. It was under Dr. Fraunfelder’s direction that the Casey Eye Institute was constructed on the Oregon Health & Science University campus, and opened in 1991.
Joe E. Robertson, MD, MBA became chairman in 1997. Under his direction, a team of highly trained and internationally acclaimed MDs and PhDs earned Casey Eye Institute recognition as one of the top eye care and research centers in the country. Dr. Robertson became dean of the OHSU School of Medicine in 2005, and in 2006 he was chosen president of Oregon Health & Science University.
David J. Wilson, MD, became chairman in 2005, overseeing Casey Eye Institute’s expansion into the OHSU Biomedical Research Building, where research teams occupy a full floor. Under his direction, Casey Eye Institute also opened a second clinic location at OHSU’s Center for Health and Healing.
