Cornea Fellowship

The OHSU/Casey Eye Institute Cornea Fellowship is a one-year Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery training program. The faculty involved include Drs. Rick W. Fraunfelder, whose interests lie in external disease, ocular drug effects and malignancies of the anterior segment; Dr. William Mathers, whose research efforts concentrate on tear film abnormalities and corneal infections, including acanthamoeba; and Dr. Larry Rich, whose interests include corneal transplantation and refractive surgery of all types.

Because of the faculty’s wide range of interests, the Casey fellowship offers a unique spectrum of educational opportunities. The Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery Service is well equipped for the diagnosis and treatment of all anterior segment disorders. Outstanding diagnostic ultrasound and photographic services are adjacent to the Cornea Clinic. In addition, we have an Ocular Response Analyzer, two corneal topography systems, a Visante OCT, a confocal microscope and an Alcon Wavefront analyzer in our clinic. The faculty are involved in clinical trials and NIH research grants.

We use an Alcon Ladarvision 4000 excimer laser and a femtosecond Intralase laser in our refractive surgery program. Our busy refractive surgical practice offers experience in LASIK, PRK, incisional keratotomy and wedge resection. The Corneal Fellow will perform these operations as part of his/her clinical experience at the Casey Eye Institute.

We believe that the candidate who successfully completes this fellowship will be proficient in penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty, Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty, and anterior segment reconstruction. The graduating Fellow will be competent in the diagnosis and treatment of external diseases of the eye, including extraocular malignancies. The candidate will learn about the principles of refractive surgery and become competent in its various surgical applications.

Casey Eye Institute participates in the matching program sponsored by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). You may contact them regarding match information at 415-447-0350 or www.SFMATCH.org.
