Fellows work with the following faculty:
Steven T. Bailey, MD
Christina J. Flaxel, M.D.
Thomas S. Hwang, M.D.
Peter J. Francis, M.D., Ph.D.
Michael L. Klein, M.D.
Andreas K Lauer, M.D.
Joseph E. Robertson, Jr., M.D. M.B.A.
J. Timothy Stout, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A.
                                                                  Robert C. Watzke, M.D.

James T. Rosenbaum, M.D.
Justine R. Smith, MBBS, PhD, FRACO
Eric B. Suhler, M.D. M.P.H.

The Retina-Vitreous service offers all modalities for the modern diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal disease. This includes echography, optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, treatment with argon and diode lasers, photodynamic therapy, intravitreal anti-VEGF administration, and pneumatic retinopexy. Fellows are trained in the use of 20-gauge, 23-gauge, 25-gauge and endoscopic vitreoretinal instrumentation, direct and indirect viewing systems, heavy liquids, multiple intraocular gases and silicone oil.

The first year of the fellowship program is divided between medical retina and surgical retina rotations. As the fellow progresses in the second year of the program there is continued exposure to a large, diverse population of surgical and medical retina patients but with increased responsibility in the management of these patients. Fellows also supervise and teach residents in some circumstances.

The fellows actively participate in a biweekly fluorescein angiography and posterior segment conference in the Department of Ophthalmology and in quarterly retina journal club. Fellows’ scholarly activity include engaging in either clinical or basic science research during training. Fellows generally submit their work in manuscript form to a peer-reviewed journal and are encouraged and supported to attend national meetings where they have the opportunity to present their research.

Our retina faculty currently participate in the NIH/NEI and industry sponsored as well as investigator initiated clinical trials. Some examples are:

  •  Age-Related Eye Disease Study II (AREDS 2),
  •  Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research network (DRCR) studies,
  • Standard Care vs. Corticosteroid for Retinal Vein Occlusion (SCORE) study,
  • Anecortave Acetate Risk-reduction (AART) trial,
  • Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT),
  • Study of Fenretinide in the Treatment of Geographic Atrophy Associated With
    Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration,
  • The OMEGA Study: Use of Eye Drops to Treat Geographic Atrophy Associated
With Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD),
  • A Study of Genetic and Environmental Factors and Their Effect on Response to
Treatment With Lucentis (Ranibizumab) for Wet AMD,
  • The Use of a VEGF Inhibitor (Ranibizumab) in Refractory Macular Edema Due
    to Eales' Disease,
  • Phase II Study of Encapsulated Human NTC-201 Cell Implants Releasing Ciliary
Neurotrophic Factor (CNFT) in early and advanced Retinitis Pigmentosa,
  • Molecular Genetics of Retinal Degenerations (NEI),
  • Repository for Inherited Eye Diseases (NEI),
  • A Study to Evaluate the Safety of CNTO 2476 in Patients With Advanced
    Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Adalimumab (Humira) in the Treatment of Refractory Non-Infectious Uveitis
