Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for Children

Children may need reconstructive eye surgery for a number of conditions. For example, a condition called congenital ptosis may require surgical correction. This condition, in which a drooping eyelid partly or completely covers the eye, needs to be corrected so children can develop normal vision.

Babies may also develop infected eyes from a condition known as "overflow tearing," in which tears fail to drain appropriately through the tear duct. Though this condition often resolves by the time a child is a year old, an ophthalmic surgeon can correct the problem in a variety of ways if it does not.
