In the opinion of Dr. Garrett's patients, her considerable clinical
skills are exceeded by only one thing - her caring and nurturing
attitude. When asked about the source of her empathetic response
to her patients, Dr. Garrett credits her optometric residency program
at the Supelveda Veterans Affairs Medical Center in California.
"I think that experience made me a more flexible and understanding
doctor," she explains, "because I treated patients from very diverse
backgrounds with unique needs."
Dr. Garrett's caring approach also stems from her personal experience.
"When I was in high school, my mother was diagnosed with macular
degeneration, a retinal condition which can destroy central vision.
Even as a young child I knew I wanted to work in the health care
field so I could solve problems and help people. My mother's experience
led me toward optometry, partly so I could understand her condition,
but also so I could help others."
Dr. Garrett began her career earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biological
Sciences from Hanover College in Indiana. She then received a Doctor
of Optometry "With Distinction" from the Southern California College
of Optometry. This was followed by her optometric residency in
Supelveda, California. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Garrett
gained experience with refractive surgery patients at a refractive
laser center in Ontario, California.
After acquiring broad-based experience in optometry, Dr. Garrett
chose to join the faculty of Casey Eye Institute. Her selection
was based on "the Center's dedication to research and academics.
I am committed to remaining involved in research and teaching,
and at Casey we are on the forefront in both areas. In this setting,
we also provide excellent patient care." Dr. Garrett enjoys the
opportunities she has to teach ophthalmology and optometry residents
and to be involved in conducting clinical research trials.
Along with caring for her patients, Dr. Garrett remains dedicated
to her profession, maintaining memberships in a variety of professional
associations. She has been heavily involved with the American Academy
of Optometry and has served on the society's Membership Development
Task Force. Locally, Dr. Garrett is committed to the Portland Metropolitan
Optometric Society. She has held several executive positions with
the organization, including President.
In her free time, Dr. Garrett has a broad spectrum of personal interests.
She loves the arts and enjoys painting and drawing "anything and
everything. I like painting still life, but I like to challenge
myself by exploring other subjects." She also enjoys reading and
traveling. She lives with her husband, Jeffrey, an optometrist
with a general practice in Portland.
