Corneal and External Disease

The faculty members of this division include Frederick (Rick) Fraunfelder, MD, William Mathers, MD, Larry Rich, MD, Rachael Garrett, OD and Derek Louie, MSc, OD. This service specializes in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the external surface and anterior (front) segment of the eye. Major areas of focus include the clinical/surgical treatment and research related to infectious diseases of the eye, diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), corneal ulcers, herpes simplex and herpes zoster, keratoconus, pterygium, acanthamoeba, corneal erosion, and corneal degenerations.

The Casey Vision Correction Center treats myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism using a combination of new laser therapy and conventional refractive techniques.


Corneal Diseases and Disorders
There are a wide variety of diseases and disorders that affect the cornea. Some are serious and may lead to a corneal transplant, while others are simply irritating and can be dealt with through drops, medication, or other interventions.
