James T. Rosenbaum, M.D., a rheumatologist who is currently president of the American Uveitis Society, founded our uveitis service in 1985. For eight years, Roger George, M.D., a uveitis specialist trained at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and now stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, has volunteered his time to staff our clinics. Eric B. Suhler, M.D., M.P.H.,, also trained at the NIH, co-directs CEI’s uveitis clinic with Dr. Rosenbaum. Dr. Suhler is also Chief of Ophthalmology at the Portland VA Medical Center.

Our uveitis research team is also fortunate to have Justine Smith, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., who trained in Adelaide, Australia and Portland. The uveitis research team is supported by seven separate NIH grants and recognized as a leader in the field.
