Our Services
The Casey Eye Institute Surgery Services provides total operative care for ophthalmic surgical patients. We care for people of all ages from neonatal to geriatric patients. And we provide services to in-hospital patients as well as for scheduled and emergency procedures. We care for an average of 3500 patients annually.
Physician Information
To schedule a procedure for a patient, please call (503) 494-3943.
Hours Of Operation
Normal hours of operation are from 6 am –7 pm, Monday through Thursday. We consider all other hours, weekend and holidays, as emergency hours. We staff emergency surgery with on-call personnel, who are off campus and have a 30-minute response time.
The operating rooms are in use between the hours of 7 am–5:15 pm. On Mondays, we staff two operating rooms for procedures. On Tuesdays, we staff all four operating rooms. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the department staffs three operating rooms.
Patient Information
When you arrive for your procedure, please go to the 6th floor reception desk and sign in. The receptionist will greet you and provide coffee for you and your guests. She’ll help you with any necessary paperwork and is in charge of your patient records. First, you’ll go to pre-operative area where the nursing staff prepares you for surgery. Procedures take place in one of four operating rooms within the surgical suite. The fourth area is the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) where patients recover before discharge or transfer to the inpatient facility.
After surgery a PACU nurse gives you home care information. If you are going home after your procedure, please arrange for an escort to give you a ride. Most patients stay in the PACU for two to three hours before they’re ready to go home. Sometimes patients are transferred to the hospital for further observation or treatment.
How We’re Organized
The department is a unit within Surgery Services under the direction of the Casey administrator and the assistant hospital director of Peri-operative Services within the University Hospital Nursing Division. The CEI Operating Room Committee oversees operations. The department director supervises the nursing staff and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the unit.
The department has four distinct patient care areas: Pre-operative Exam, Pre-Operative Preparation, the Operating Suite and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. We use two patient exam rooms for preoperative medical exams, laboratory blood draws and EKG procedures.
Pre-Operative and Post Operative Areas
Registered nurses (RN) work in the Pre-Operative and Post Operative area (also known as Casey Short Stay) Monday through Thursday, from 6 am - 7 pm. RNs provide all primary patient care from assessment through discharge. They prepare the patient for the surgical procedure according to the surgeon and anesthesiologist’s orders and the policies and procedures of the department.
Staff
The Surgical Teams consist of a physician and RNs or a combination of a RN and surgical technician who are specialists in ophthalmic surgery.
